The Quinta Vergara is the green heart of Viña del Mar. It was the estate of the Álvarez–Vergara family, whose land became the city when it was founded in 1878, and it is now a public park of exotic trees, lawns and shady avenues just south of the railway line, a ten-minute walk from the main square.
At its centre stands the Palacio Vergara, built in the early 20th century in a romantic Venetian neo-Gothic style and home to the Museo de Bellas Artes, the city’s fine-arts collection. Tucked into the hillside behind it is the amphitheatre that hosts the Viña del Mar International Song Festival every February — one of the biggest music events in the Spanish-speaking world.
Top things to do at Quinta Vergara
Visit the Palacio Vergara
The palace reopened after a long restoration following earthquake damage. Its rooms show the fine-arts collection and the lavish interiors of a Belle Époque family home. Check current opening hours before you go — they vary by season.
Walk the park
Paths wind among araucarias, palms, eucalyptus and old ornamental trees. It is a favourite picnic spot for local families and one of the coolest places in the city on a hot afternoon.
See (or attend) the festival amphitheatre
The Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar has been held here since 1960. Its demanding audience is nicknamed “el Monstruo” — the Monster. Outside festival week you can often see the amphitheatre from the park; concerts are also held here at other times of year.
How to get to Quinta Vergara
- On foot: about ten minutes from Plaza Vergara — walk south along Avenida Libertad or Calle Quillota and cross the railway line; the main entrance is on Errázuriz.
- By train: Viña del Mar station on the Metro Valparaíso line is a few blocks away.
- From Valparaíso: 20 minutes by train or bus.
Insider tips
- Park opening hours and the palace’s museum hours differ — the park is usually open daily, while the museum typically closes one day a week. Check before you go.
- Festival tickets for February go on sale months in advance and sell out quickly; the city fills up that week, so book accommodation early.
- Combine the Quinta Vergara with Palacio Rioja, a short walk away.
