Viña del Mar’s Beaches

Caleta Abarca, El Sol, Acapulco and more

Viña del Mar is Chile’s best-known beach resort, and its city beaches line the bay from south to north: little Caleta Abarca by the Flower Clock; the rocky coves around Castillo Wulff; then, north of the casino, the long urban sands of El Sol, Los Marineros and Acapulco, with the restored iron Muelle Vergara pier; and further on, Las Salinas and then Reñaca.

Set expectations before you pack: the Humboldt Current keeps the sea cold — typically around 13–17 °C even in summer — and the Pacific swell can be strong. People do swim, briefly and at lifeguarded beaches. But what the beaches do brilliantly is the rest: long walks, sunsets, people-watching, ice cream on the promenade and the buzz of a Chilean summer.

Top things to do at Viña del Mar’s Beaches

Walk the seafront

Start at the Flower Clock and follow Avenida Marina past Castillo Wulff to Avenida Perú and the casino, then continue along the beaches to Muelle Vergara — around an hour of easy, flat walking.

Walk out on Muelle Vergara

The old iron pier, built for loading goods at the end of the 19th century, has been restored as a promenade — the best place to look back at the city skyline.

Swim (briefly) where it’s safe

Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and a green flag. Lifeguards are on duty in the summer season (roughly December to March).

Stay for the sunset

The bay faces west: find a spot on the sand or a terrace on Avenida Perú and watch the sun drop into the Pacific.

How to get to Viña del Mar’s Beaches

  • On foot: all the central beaches are within 5–25 minutes’ walk of Plaza Vergara.
  • By bus: buses along Avenida San Martín and the coast road connect the beaches with the centre and with Reñaca.
  • From Santiago: about 1.5–2 hours by bus — see our Santiago to Viña del Mar guide.

Insider tips

  • Red flag means no swimming — take it seriously; rip currents are common.
  • Even on hot days the morning can be grey: the coastal fog usually burns off by midday.
  • In January and February the central beaches are packed, especially at weekends. Go early or head north to quieter coves.
  • Bring a windbreaker: the afternoon sea breeze is cool.
