The tall, narrow La Sebastiana house of Pablo Neruda on Cerro Florida, Valparaíso

La Sebastiana (Neruda’s House)

Pablo Neruda’s house above the bay of Valparaíso

Pablo Neruda, Chile’s Nobel Prize-winning poet, had three houses: La Chascona in Santiago, the seaside house at Isla Negra, and La Sebastiana in Valparaíso. He wanted a house in the city that was “not too high, not too low”, quiet but central — and found this unfinished building on Cerro Florida, which he completed with friends and inaugurated in 1961.

The house is tall and narrow, each floor a single room or two, stacked like the decks of a ship, and filled with Neruda’s collections: maps, ship figureheads, glassware, paintings and curiosities. From the upper floors the view sweeps over the whole bay of Valparaíso. It is run as a museum by the Fundación Pablo Neruda.
