Casablanca Valley

Cool-climate wine country on the road to Santiago

Drive between Santiago and the coast on Route 68 and, about halfway, you cross the Casablanca Valley, a broad basin of vineyards around the small town of Casablanca. Vines were only planted here from the 1980s, when winemakers realised that the morning fog and cool breezes from the Pacific made it ideal for fresh, aromatic white wines.

Today Casablanca is Chile’s best-known cool-climate region, famous for Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, with excellent Pinot Noir and cool-climate Syrah too. Wineries such as Casas del Bosque, Veramonte, Emiliana, Indómita and Kingston offer tastings, tours and — in several cases — very good restaurants.

Top things to do at Casablanca Valley

Taste at two or three wineries

Most wineries run tours with tastings several times a day; booking ahead is recommended, especially at weekends.

Have lunch among the vines

Winery restaurants serve long lunches paired with their own wines — one of the best meals you can have in central Chile.

Let someone else drive

Chile has a zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving. A wine tour or a hired driver lets you enjoy the tasting.

How to get to Casablanca Valley

  • From Viña del Mar or Valparaíso: about 40–50 minutes by car via Route 68.
  • From Santiago: about an hour by car; many Santiago–coast day trips include a winery stop here.
  • By bus: Santiago–coast buses pass through Casablanca, but wineries are spread out and hard to reach without a car.

Insider tips

  • Mornings can be foggy and cool even in summer — that is exactly what the grapes like.
  • Harvest is roughly March to April, a lovely time to visit.
  • Ask about shipping or buy only what you can carry; many wineries sell bottles at the cellar door.
